COLLIN COLLEGE HOSTS FIRST IRON POUR

On Saturday April 20th, Collin College sculpture faculty and students successfully poured cast iron for the first time in the history of the Collin College Art Department. This epic feat was made possible by a dedicated group of sculpture students who worked together to safely pour over 800 lbs. of cast iron under the direction of Sculpture Professor Luke Sides and Art Labs Coordinator Joel Kiser.

In the weeks leading up to the Iron Pour, Sculpture students diligently collected scrap bathtubs and assisted in the welding of sand pits, while at the same time working on their own molds to be cast. All of the iron poured was actually collected by hand breaking cast iron bathtubs and sinks into small potato chip size pieces to be collected and poured into a homemade Cupola furnace, constructed by Art Labs Coordinator Joel Kiser.

The event was made more spectacular by Visiting Artist John Robert “Jack” Craft, who shared his art-making process and life experiences as a rancher with the Sculpture students. Jack Craft was the Sculpture Area’s first Visiting Artist who worked hand in hand with the Sculpture students. The presence of the Visiting Artist at this first ever Collin College Iron Pour, helped to energize the Sculpture students’ art-making processes and infuse in them a newfound teamwork, confidence, and camaraderie. Not only did the iron furnace successfully run, it ran faster and smoother than expected, resulting in over 800 lbs. of cast iron forms. The success of the Iron Pour was also reinforced by the large amount of alumni who showed up to cheer on the pour teams and be part of this wonderful event. The Iron Pour has also opened the doors for beneficial relationships with other academic institutions and laid the foundations for future Iron Casting workshops that will serve to benefit Sculpture students and The Art Department as a whole.

It was an amazing event that brought together people from the community, potential students, current students and alumni. Art-making is usually a solo endeavor and the Iron pour forced the students to work together towards a common goal. Can’t wait until we do this again! ”

2012 Texas Sculpture Symposium – San Angelo, Texas

October 26 & 27, 2012

Presented by The Sculpture Network of Texas in collaboration with San Angelo Museum of Fine Arts and the First Annual Salmon Sculpture Competition, Angelo State University Department of Art & Music, and Texas Tech University School of Art.

REGISTRATION FORM: This year’s Symposium is FREE courtesy of the Sculpture Network of Texas with completed Registration Form (all you have to cover is travel, lodging and some meals).

Pre-Register now to receive a Symposium Badge which provides you free lunch on Saturday, access to the Symposium Attendee Sculpture Show and Reception Saturday afternoon, and a ticket to the Saturday night BBQ.

SYMPOSIUM HOTEL: A block of rooms reserved at Inn of the Conchos, 325-658-2811, at $99.95 per night (double occupancy). Please call and book by the end of the day on October 12. Other hotels in San Angelo might have lower rates – but Reserve Your Rooms NOW! (A roping competition that same weekend is expected to have all the rooms in town sold out quickly.)

ATTENDEE EXHIBITION: As in the past, Symposium attendees are invited to bring a small portable sculpture (“that you can carry under your arm” – about 12x12x12 inches) for an Attendee Exhibition. The San Angelo Museum of Fine Arts has generously provided their COOP Gallery for display of these works. Reception for this exhibition will be held from 4:00 – 6:00 pm on Saturday.

Texas Tech Call for Public Art Proposal

Project Scope: The Texas Tech University System seeks to commission an artist to create an outdoor public sculpture to be located on the lawn at the Northeast corner of the new home to the College of Mass Communications. In light of the building’s new occupants, Texas Tech seeks designs that engage issues of media literacy and the liberal arts education. Media—both digital and more “traditional” forms—have become increasingly important in our lives, encompassing everything from the political process, to entertainment, to quality of life and beyond. Questions to consider may include: What potential effect(s) do media have on people? What is the role of media in a democratic society? How have media affected broader cultural constructs, and how do they continue to do so? Ideal submissions will unify the newly renovated building and the surrounding campus architecture, and will be made of durable, low-maintenance materials. Proposals incorporating color and texture are welcomed. In order to be considered, submissions must attend to the conceptual goals outlined in this document. Objects that are mass-produced or of standard manufacture are not eligible for consideration.

Project Budget: $235,000 (All Inclusive). This amount is inclusive of all costs associated with this public art project including, but not limited to, artist fees, other consultants’ fees, insurance to cover the scope of the project, materials, fabrication, transportation, and installation (including any site modification).

John Van Alstine to Keynote 2011 Texas Sculpture Symposium

New York artist, John Van Alstine, will be the Keynote Speaker for the 2011 Texas Sculpture Symposium. Presented by the University of Texas at Tyler in collaboration with the Sculpture Network of Texas, this fall’s Symposium will be held November 4th – 6th on the UT-Tyler campus in Tyler, Texas.

The Symposium will include juried outdoor and indoor sculpture exhibitions, workshops, presentations as well as the usual music, barbeque, beer and networking that the annual symposium is known for.

Texas Tech Requests Proposals for Art

Rendering of south entrance to the Rawls College of Business Administration building currently under construction at Texas Tech.

The Texas Tech University System Public Art Committee is seeking proposals from artists to create large-scale artwork for the new Rawls College of Business Administration building at the Lubbock, Texas campus. The final product will contribute significantly to the public art collection at Texas Tech and enhance and compliment the newly-constructed 149,000 square foot facility.

Budget: $675,000 (all-inclusive)
Submission deadline: 2:00PM, CDT, Wednesday, May 25, 2011

The Rosen Outdoor Sculpture Competition & Exhibition is now accepting entries for the 25th competition. If you are interested in entering the competition, please refer to the following documents:

The postmark deadline for entries is February 12, 2011. Notifications will be emailed or mailed on March 9, 2011 (winners may be called). The Installation Celebration will be held April 14 – 16, 2011, with the actual exhibition running through March 2012.
